Anne Brookover

Ever since I was a little tot, I have been obsessed with animals. I surround myself with them! And a childhood filled with pets of all types definitely cemented my love of them. Add to this a lifetime spent with horses and you understand my passion for painting horses and pets.

Born and raised in England, and abroad, with sibling brothers that were also animal lovers, my parents patiently endured the steady stream of pets and rescued wild life through our household. My mother loves to tell the story of how she scaled a blackberry hedge when I was two, to drag me away from under ‘huge snorting horses’ that I had crawled under the hedge to visit with! Naturally she was terrified though I was fine and fearless. My teens were spent riding in the beautiful Cotswold countryside, where horses abound. The memories of my crisp snowy morning rides across Cleeve Hill have never left me.

I won a National Art competition when I was eight and several more art awards throughout my schooling, ending with honors in my finals, though I didn’t choose it as a career. I am as a result, a self taught artist.

Years later, having lived abroad yet again, I came to Texas, where I became involved in the training, showing and breeding of Arabian horses. For twenty years I was in my element and so fortunate to own and work with many of these gorgeous and intelligent horses; and when I found the time, which wasn’t very often, I painted them. With the artist in me surfacing again, it was only natural for the two passions to ignite the flame and combine on my canvas.

Living with them on a daily basis gave me so much insight into their characters, conformation and their movement. Their personalities differed enormously and those eyes, well, I am fascinated with eyes. I try to portray all aspects of horses in my paintings, from their classic elegance, regal stature and powerful conformation, to the absolute poetry of their motion. How can one not be in awe of these beautiful creatures?

As you can see from We Three Kings, I really want to concentrate on portraying my beloved Arabian horses, the variety and subject matter for which is endless, though I am still painting special pets as well as racehorses.

My artwork to date is in private collections in the United States, Europe and the Caribbean. Many of these were commissions, and my clients without exception have been delighted with their portraits.
